Chimney Maintenance

A Guide to Chimney Repairs: Minor vs Major

Owning a home with a fireplace and chimney brings warmth, comfort, and coziness. However, it also comes with responsibility. Over time, your chimney is likely to need repair or maintenance. But, how do you know when a minor repair is enough and when a major repair is necessary? Have no fear! Chimney Champions is here to break it down so you can make the best decision for your home and family.

Minor Repairs

When it comes to minor repairs, the goal is usually to restore functionality without doing any major reconstruction. These repairs are typically done as preventive maintenance to keep your chimney in good condition for years to come. Common minor repair projects include sweeping, waterproofing, cleaning the flue liner, and installing or replacing caps and covers. Flashing (the metal strips that seal the joint between the chimney and roof) may also be considered a minor repair but is often performed by roofers rather than chimney sweeps.

Major Repairs

Major repairs are more complex projects that require more labor and materials than minor repairs. This work is typically needed if there has been significant damage due to weather or age-related wear-and-tear. Some examples of minor repairs include rebuilding deteriorated fireboxes, replacing damaged flue liners, removing debris from smoke chambers, and reconstructing entire sections of masonry or brickwork due to cracks or other issues.
