3 Facts About Efflorescence

Are you starting to see a white powder form on the exterior of your chimney? This residue is called efflorescence, and it’s not uncommon for homeowners to think that this is just a sign of an aging chimney. However, it’s a sign that your chimney needs an inspection, and the professionals at Chimney Champions want you to know that efflorescence should not be ignored. In fact, it could be a sign of a larger issue with your chimney, and definitely should be inspected. Here are several facts you need to know about this white, powdery substance appearing on your stack.

1. Efflorescence Is Not Dangerous

Despite what you might think, efflorescence is not a dangerous substance. However, that doesn’t mean you should touch it or try to scrape it off your chimney yourself. Efflorescence is actually crystallized salt deposits and is a common issue for outdoor hardscapes such as tiles, bricks, pavers, and concrete. The salt deposits tend to crystalize on or around the grout between your chimney bricks. While some efflorescence is normal, an excess amount should not be ignored.

2. Moisture Is the Culprit

Efflorescence forms after months of humidity or rain, which is common here in Florida. You might notice that the white powder seems to disappear when it’s wet outside but reappears as soon as things dry out. The moisture could also be coming from within your chimney, and the efflorescence is seeping through the porous bricks and grout. If you have a water problem coming from within your chimney, you need an inspection to determine the best course of repair.

3.  There Is No Permanent Solution

Efflorescence is a naturally occurring product that forms when a tile or brick is exposed to the elements. Unfortunately, there is no permanent solution that guarantees these salt deposits won’t appear on your chimney. The best thing you can do is have your chimney inspected regularly. If the moisture problem is coming from within your flue and stack, then you must get these features replaced. A new chimney cap will also help prevent rain and moisture from getting into your chimney.
